More stuff

John W, our handyman, stopped by yesterday to look at David’s shower and our archaic and overly large treadmill, and give us an estimate for repairing the first and hauling the latter to Habitat for Humanity where he works part-time.  I can take the treadmill apart and haul it off, he said.  I gave a sigh of relief, I need the space for a recumbent bike.

David uses the upright bike, but my back wont tolerate sitting upright on a bike. I gave the very nice outdoor bike I purchased when I retired to ‘Bikes for the World.’

My doctor wants me to ride a bike to strengthen my legs. I don’t drive to the gym owing to my knee, and won’t ride in a car with David driving.

I finished therapy on my shoulder yesterday.  I begin knee therapy in September.

John W finished his knee therapy Monday (he fell last winter) and David is having therapy on his shoulder for several more weeks.

We talked about therapy of course.  Then we switched to other topics including Hillary.  John is a captain precinct in her campaign and he loves my car which is plastered with Hillary stickers while sporting “Don’t Tread on Me” license plates.

John has been working on his family tree, and he knows the flag was flown during the Revolution of 1776-1781. No modern group has rights to this flag.

My daughter told me the other day that some misinformed people think the flag is racist. This kind of “politically correct” thinking is exactly wrong and plays into the hands of “you-know-who.”

Having no appointments, today, I will put a further dent in Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men and finish The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery.  Both books by Eric Foner recall the political history of the US from the 1840s to the 1860s. Next up, Reconstruction 1863-1877 by Foner.

If you think the political times we are living through are messy, read these books. Nativists, Know-Nothings, Free Soilers, Radical Abolitionists, Whigs, Republicans, Democrats, populate these pages. (Don’t get your history from  right-winger D’Sousa.)

Of interest to me. Years ago, I read Toni Morrison’s Beloved.  Her lyrical and fictional tale is based on a fugitive slave and a historical event Foner describes.

  1. hope the therapy appointments help! How do you get to your appointments (or anywhere at all for that matter) if you can’t drive and can’t ride with David?

Oh I saw your comment answer about Scoop Jackson — we were born and raised in Washington State and I remember meeting him at Dem. functions with my parents. Family hero —

I wouldn’t think of reading De’Souza’s book — makes me so sad to see it on the NYT Best Seller list.

  2. Rita’s family selfie is gorgeous. I have rarely seen a young baby with such beautiful big and knowing eyes. Blessings from Dalamory for you all.

  3. You two are sure keeping the therapists busy, but glad you’re able to have benefit of their services. I think the NuStep (it’s recumbent) is the ideal and to be preferred over the bike, but they are expensive. Rehab clinics and possibly some gyms have the NuStep — a backward and forward extension movement, rather than the rotating bike pedals. Assume you’ve had input from your P.T. re using a recumbent bike.

I know the history and meaning of the “Don’t Tread On Me” flag but in recent politics haven’t the Tea Party people commandeered it’s use? Given some of the actions and politicians associated with that group perhaps individuals objecting to some of those people are offended by the flag as being representative of them.

    • Great suggestion Jo. Love the NuStep. Will buy one as soon as David cleans out the corner where his junk now resides and John hauls off the treadmill. Have used the NuStep at my rehab facility and it works well!

Re the flag. Yes some right-wingers have tried to commandeer the use of the flag lately, but as John says we should take it back. Hillary made a great start at her convention. Right wing does not own the yellow flag or the US flag. And the left does not own the Democrat party.

Scoop Jackson, Blue dog Democrats are my heroes. I loved the 2016 Democrat convention. I am a Moderate flag-waver and eschew both nutty wings. “Left-wing/right-wing bird can’t fly.”

Thank god Obama finally found his footing with border enforcement and overseas military activity. Cant let the Russians, North Koreans, Chinese and ISIL run roughshod over people. Think of the children.

  4. Interesting about the flag and what others try to make of it now. I had a copy of our original flag because I like the way it looks with its circle of stars. I hung it up one 4th of July and got a lot of “interesting” comments. Surprising what goes through some people’s minds.

Sorry about your knee, that kind of thing is what made me give up driving a stick shift.

    • Oh I drive short distances. They gym is too far away and down a road with 20 stoplights. The stop-start kills might knee.

Thus, I can drive but its painful. Doctor thinks bike riding will make it better.
Tell your David, who is ten years younger than me, not to fall. I did well for six months after surgery, then I fell. The knee cap slides around now.
